If you like Mediterranean food this is the place to go especially for fresh pita bread!

Really good Hummus, Sandwiches, and groceries. Their lamb chops are awesome!! Really good lunch buffet!

This place is the holy grail of Mediterranean food. They have a buffet Monday through Friday during lunch that is incredible. I have yet to find a place that compares. Everything they make is not only cheap for the portion for amazingly delicious. I come here on the weekends sometimes to get a chicken shawarma or falafel sandwich. Cheaper than fast food and sooooo much better. They also make baklava which is really good more cinnamon than most, but in a great way. I will continue to come here about once a fortnight.

Epic chicken shawerma, yep you could bring me here on a date here for this. Dingy middle eastern market but it's got some of the most intensely tasting stuff coming out of their kitchen. Lunch buffet during the week is really good but the chicken shawerma, which I have kinda put together using the goods the buffet provides is so tasty. They always have the more recognized by the american palette of middle eastern offerings but also put out a couple of their own favorites. Might I suggest also picking up a bottle of the yogurt(ayran) drink to go with the meal and ending with traditional hot tea. Their market is interest peaking, I grab whatever looks interesting and google at home what to do with it. Seriously some of my best meals happen this way. They also have a good selection of hookah stuff to take home, which is amazing after a meal. Wish they were closer.

You know they say the best food is from hole in the wall places and this one does not disappoint on those stereotypes! Since it's just down the road from work I maybe come here once month. They have a buffet which is perfect so you can sample everything that they have. There's also a menu to order off of but why bother. The falafel is good, the chicken is good, the fish is good, the lamb is good... Pretty much can't go wrong with anything. You walk in... Ignore the grocery store, make a left and there's the buffet. You grab a styrofoam plate and pile it on! Grab a seat cause it gets busy durning lunch. Don't forget to grab a drink at the fountain. No one seats you and it's pretty much the honor system when it comes to paying at the end.

It's almost impossible to find unless you know it's there. Just the way I like it. It's no-nonsense; you get a plate of food, and it'll be one of the best plates of Middle Eastern food you've had. The portions are big, bigger than you'd think for the price, even the "american" sides of fries. Huge. And they let you know if you think you haven't eaten enough. It's definitely not a place that's trying to cater to anyone wanting a tourist-y rendition of the regional flavors. It's a grocery, first and foremost, and yeah, they sell plates to order. You sit where there's a table, either near the front door or in the spartan "dining hall" through a side door. The whole place feels cobbled together, disorienting the first time you go in, like it's purposely trying to dissuade anyone who's not sure if they should be there. And that's why it's awesome. Because once you taste what they're cooking in there, it'll all make sense, it's all worth it. Probably the closest thing you'll get to feeling like you're Anthony Bourdain finding some out-of-the way and maybe-even-dangerous place to eat in this part of the country. Now, if you can just find the joint...

Absolutely one the best in Kc. Gyros are the best we have had. Hummus and pitta bread are made in house. Get them, you will not be disappointed. At the counter service is fast and efficient. This place is always consistent for us. A complete yes.

Love this place! Hot fresh made pita every day, great middle eastern grocery store and a very good middle eastern restaurant. They also offer a lunch buffet I believe on Thu/Fri & Sat. I would say my favorite thing they offer is the hummus with gyro meat, but then again the meat samosas are good oh and the falafel and don't forget to pick up a bag of fresh hot pita to take home....really just everything is good there so go for the buffet and try it all!!

I stumbled across this little cafe / grocery last year in the dead of winter when I happened to drive by on an errand. It's the sort of place you'd never otherwise find, which is a bit of a shame, because the food is so good. You drive into the parking lot and you're not sure that the place is even open, but they actually are. Our little group bought a selection of items, meat-bearing and not from the menu and shared. They were all delicious. As to the grocery selection, it's decent enough that you can cook most recipes, although the spices are priced higher than they are at the middle eastern market in the River Market, but then again, you don't have to deal with the cranky proprietor at the River Market, either. If you're in the neighborhood, going there will save you a drive for sure if you happen to run out of masoor dal or turmeric - don't pay Whole Foods prices, go here instead.

I've been wanting to try middle eastern cuisine for some time now. OK...only a month and a half since I turned veghead. Sadly I've been denied for weeks now ..(throws an evil eye Wolfie's way ;p), but thanks to some obliging co-workers, I was whisked off to the Olive cafe for lunch today. I already knew what I'd get...one of the few non meat offerings....the falafel sandwich. I did my falafel research....I felt there was a pretty good chance I'd like it. Meh....not so much. Loved it ! Should have purchased another one to cart home. Freshly made - fresh pita bread - fresh toppings. Awesome first time experience that definitely wont be my last. Hodge podge little place. Only had a few minutes to look around. The grocery had lots of stuff I've never heard off, but looked damn good. I did end up buying some fresh pita bread to take home, and some sweets - baklava-esq noms that are choked full of nuts and funky flavors - that my co-workers are devouring at this very moment. Great prices.....huge portions. This is definitely a place to give a go !

I've been to this place three times, and have never been disappointed. I am middle eastern my self, so to me the food that they serve is pretty authentic to what I can get in the middle east. I love it. The spices and flavors are on the dot! The one thing that I personally like, is that they have a grocery store with it, which I get the middle eastern products from their as well. Try this place! I've been three times and haven't been disappointed!

This is a great place for KC. Why? The only other KC place that makes their own wheat flatbread is Jerusalem cafe, and competition is good. They also have lots of homemade hummus, and other stuff. Baklava, probably. In addition, there was lots of traditional imported stuff, like those grape-leaf wrapped things, and other cooking implements. I remember it tucked away in a nondescript small strip-mall thing amongst the middle-burbs of Kansas City. But it was worth the road-trip. Why 5 stars? Because for Kansas City, this is a premier ethnic foods joint. Although I haven't been to the east/west coast gourmet food places lately, this place hits the spot for this area.

I work in the Grandview Triangle area and there are not many good lunch spot within a reasonable distance, but now that I have tried Olive Cafe, I may be changing my mind. I group of folks from my office went here for lunch on Friday. I was a little worried when we walked in because it is basically a Middle Eastern/Mediterranean grocery store. You order at the check out line and then there is a room off to the side that has an ample amount of seating. I had the Gyro Salad ($9) and would highly recommend it.

  • Courtney C.

I absolutely love this place. Not only do they have great food but they have an amazing market as well. The best hummus, falafel, and fresh pita in the city.

  • Matt M.

Go for the falefel, stay for the Al Jazeera. Very good food near the Triangle. This is a frequent lunch destination for me and my coworkers. I'm addicted to the falafel sandwich. It's one of the best I've had, although my experience with falafel is somewhat limited. I've seen many people order the gyro or kebab plates and struggle to finish them. The portions can be very generous for not a lot of money.

Thus place was awesome. I would recommend the buffet for 8.99 you can get all of your favorite medeterranian foods for less than 10 bucks all u can eat too. I gave these guys 5 stars because they deserve it.

Went for the first time today and ordered chicken gyro. YUCK! Chicken BLAND, Sauce Inside BLAND, Fries OVER SEASONED. My husband didn't even finish his. And the cashier/owner not friendly at all. Will be my first and last.

Olive Cafe is hands down the best Mediterranean food in KC. Monday - Friday they have a killer lunch buffet (11am-2pm). Best humus, falafel, gyro, chicken shawarma, and baklava I've had. I'll try and stop in as often as I can. Do yourself a favor and make this place a regular on your eating out list.

My husband and I found this place just surfing around on yelp. We were so excited that we made dinner plans that evening. We ordered to go and while we waited for our food, we explored the small grocery store. We bought a ton of things , candy, etc. Our dinner was delicious. He got a gyro salad and I got a meat combo with chicken, beef, and like a burger patty thing. It was all delicious. We know we will become regulars in there!

  • Thomas M.

Good food, but over priced. I ordered the #6 with a side of humus. The kofta was a pretty bland paddy, the lamb was tasty but way over cooked little morsels, the chicken were really nice and flavorful chunks, and the humus was very good. The humus was brought out looking like a real work of art. Why didn't I get a picture of THAT??? The accompanying bread was like store bought flat bread. Definitely NOT what I expect from a good restaurant. The place was real mom and pops, but appeared clean. The store that the cafe is inside of is outstanding. LOTS of items to choose from. The service was very friendly and helpful. The service is part counter-service and part full service.

A friend and I were in the area during the week around noon and decided to try something new for lunch. I never would have found this place without Yelp! The food was great, we decided to do the buffet so we could sample a lot of things. I especially loved the lentil soup, baba g, spicy chicken kabobs and the fried pita bread. The restaurant is in a very small shopping area with other ethnic offerings. We also enjoyed touring the specialty store. What a fun surprise! I'll be back, for sure.

They have the best fresh Manakeesh & Falafel. Manakeesh is a round bread sprinkled with either cheese, ground meat or herbs (zaatar). It's ideal for breakfast or lunch.

  • Mykl R.

The reviews and the hype about this place are all accurate! I found this place on yelp while I was lost in the area looking for a descent place to eat that was quick. I am a recent transplant to KC from LA and have been missing my diverse selection of good food that I could get on any corner in LA. So I was super excited when I found this place! The service is great, and the food is even better!

Olive Café (and middle eastern grocery store) is tucked away in a small strip mall in Eastern Kansas City. The television in the dining room is always tuned to Al Jazeera's news network, and the bright orange booths are not particularly comfortable, but what Olive Café lacks in ambiance it easily makes up for in good, inexpensive middle eastern cuisine. Olive Café offers a great little lunch buffet for around $10. The buffet offers the usual middle eastern fare including falafel, stuffed grape leaves, and spit roasted beef and lamb. It's one of our favorite dives.

  • Jess O.

The best most fresh bread in the world! They bake and cook everything so fresh. We had a ton of food, including the buffet and shawrmas are fantastic...uh, if I lived in Kansas, I would eat here every day. I love how they actually cook the chicken and beef for shawrmas in the cone shaped grilling thingy. Perfectly authentic deliciousness. For the grocery store, I would also grab the fresh bread and some cheese, olive oil, and za3tar and have a delicious picnic.

The food is great. The atmosphere makes my family and I feel uncomfortable. The staff, usually Jamal, are not friendly towards my wife. She has difficulty trying to order food over the phone or in person because of how dismissive they are towards women. The last time I went there, however, I overheard Jamal and a customer discussing jihad. They had al'Jazeera news on at the time inside the shop. I felt extremely uncomfortable, as I'm non-Muslim. My family and I are tired of the hostile environment. We will no longer be eating there at all.

Wide variety of menu. Buffet is always refilled on time. Value for money. After food , I used to shop around in the grocery store attached to the cafe for middle eastern ingredients , like pickled turnips and real quboos.

  • Faiz S.

I've been here plenty of times. Before they even had a buffet. I feel this place has grown and improved very well through out the years. I would highly recommend you try the buffet first, you'll get a good idea of what they have for the most part. They usually have a standard set of dishes and a couple of items keep switching every day. If ordering from the menu, I always recommend the chicken or beef shrak. It's a huge sandwich perfect for meat lovers. Seating space is adequate. They have outside seating as well that helps a lot during the spring and summer months. The prices are very reasonable especially for the amount of food that you get. The one thing I wish they bring back is the true shawarma meat from the vertical spit that they have.

Mediterranean good close to home and as good as you can find in New York. It is in a grocery store, and looks scary from the outside, but it is so worth it!

Olive Cafe is a hidden gem with consistently good, cheap food. It isn't fancy, in fact the restaurant portion of the building seems like an afterthought (since it's primarily a market), but it is definitely worth the trip. I've tried a little bit of everything: kebab, gyro, falafel, veggie sampler, you really can't go wrong. My go-to is the hummus with meat (i ask for a combo of gyro and chicken on top) and they bring you as much pita as you need. You can have them add more or leave off the olive oil and spicy sauce. Bottom line: Delicious, cheap, fast Mediterranean food.

It's tough to find a good Middle Eastern place in the east-side of KC. I've been traveling to Lee's Summit/Independence area for work recently, and the good food choices out that way seem....sparse at best. I was so stoked when I yelped around to find a spot for lunch and found Olive Cafe: It's in a small shopping center in a small community near Raytown. It has a Halal market, with tons of interesting items: freshly baked pita bread, fresh cuts of meat, and all sorts of sweets, spices, and foods from the Arab world. Don't expect anything fancy, but the place is very clean, unlike the sorry excuses for Asian markets that are up in the Rivermarket district (see my review of 888 market in Overland Park for a REAL Asian market!) Then I saw their menu *drool*. They have delicious schwerma, gyros, and falafel. I ordered the hummus gyro plate, which came with a HUGE basket of fresh pita bread. The gyro and hummus portions were gigantic - I had to take half of it home! And it was cheap, too! The whole meal, including a drink, for under $10. The meat was excellent - crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, with great seasoning. The bread and hummus were made there and delicious. I also saw that they do a buffet on Fri. It is all-you-can eat and $15 I think. For those who are virgin to Middle Eastern cuisine, it'd be a great place to get your feet wet. You know the place is good when most of the patrons are speaking Arabic. The place is packed for lunchtime. All of the Arab/North African/Turkish/Pakastani docs I work with go here frequently, too! I'd give the place 4/5 stars. Bread for All is still #1 in my book in the KC Area, but if you're out in eastern KC, definitely check this place out.

  • Jessica L.

Dang, this place is tasty. I love going on Thursdays because their buffet is out, but ordering on any other day is just as delicious. It's one of the few places around this area that is worth venturing out to. Fresh and full of flavor at a great value... one of the best middle eastern places I've been to in Kansas City or Dallas. Ambience is very "low-key" haha... just go and try it. ; )

This is simply my favorite restaurant in KC. The Friday lunch buffet is ridiculously good. Try not gourge yourself. Try everything on the buffet. The grilled eggplant is fabulous.

  • Tony R.

This is an older review - I have lived in the area almost 6 years and never visited this place. I finally decided to give them a try, and let me tell you, I wish I had been going here earlier. I order two plates, the chicken kabob and gyro and fries. The food was delicious, and enough for two people to get two meals each out of it, all for under $20. The staff was friendly and helpful, and food was ready in about 10 minutes for take out.

  • Craig H.

Dont freak out when you enter. This is an ethnic market AND cafe. Order at the counter and go sit. Or peruse the market for interesting wares. Mediterranean food. The food is fantastic. Try the kabab combo to sample all. Beef, chicken, lamb. All good. Going back. Close to home. Cerner peeps... Great lunch place close Innovations campus. I agreed with the other yelpers on the 4 and 5 stars. Ignore that 2 star rating by the self indulgent reviewer who admitted only having tried falafel for the 2nd time. It must've been a bad day at the cafe.

    (5)
  • Heather P.

This place is fantastic. Don't let the grocery store as you enter fool you. Walk in and to the left there is a simple counter with a menu posted on the wall. Order and then your food will be brought to you in the seating area opposite of the grocery. The food is unbelievable. We had a family meal there and split a large salad that was full of cucumbers, tomatoes, feta cheese, lettuce and olives with a tangy dressing. Not overdressed it was just right. Also ordered was the falafel platter, the hummus platter and the chicken kabobs. OH my...so much food and only one stomach to eat it with. The falafel was perfectly cooked and was neither dry nor greasy. It came with three different accoutrements; a hot chili paste, tzatziki sauce and a mixture of tomatoes, cucumbers and perhaps tahini. All were great. The hummus was the creamiest I have had in a while with rich olive oil drizzled on top. And of course more of the chili paste in the middle so you could spice it how you liked. The chicken kabob and rice were so tasty. Chucks of chicken over saffron rice with fried onions and bell peppers. The rice was so decadent I could have made a meal of it alone. And of course there was plenty of fresh pita to eat with. My only regret is this is so far away from the house. We were on our way to the zoo when I yelped for something good. I am glad I did, and I promise to make the journey back soon. Already dreaming of the falafel.....

This review is specifically for the Friday lunch buffet. Came with a large group of friends who frequent Olive Cafe on a weekly basis. For me it was off the beaten path and I would never have just stumbled across it. I am a fan of non-chain restaurants and this place is no exception. The fresh pita bread and hummus alone are worth the price of admission! Every bite of marinated seasoned meat was delicious too! In my opinion this place needs to expand and focus more on the food. Yes, it's inside a grocery store of sorts, which is tucked away in a mini-mall off the main drag... but it's time to get another location and do JUST FOOD. 2nd location. Please!!! They do it so well! This would be my go to date night place. But as it is, squished in a little side room, and eating off Styrofoam plates with plastic cutlery and no wait staff sort of makes it a little less romantic than I want date nights to be. I'll be back.

I can not believe that I've been in KC, MO for 6 months. How did I live so long with out finding this place? What was I doing with all my time? If I had known... only if I had known. I had the Gyro plate and I did not struggle to finish it. The meat was a little over cooked but everything else was great. I stood in line and stared at the menu wanting to eat just about EVERYTHING. side note: my rating would have been higher if I didn't live in the Southbay to taste the best of the best

    (3)
  • Kevin C.

Forget Jerusalem Cafe and Aladdin Cafe. This place rules. It's kind of out there, but worth the drive. I've had a few great dishes but the gyro sandwich is exceptional when compared to others in Kansas City. The meat is chunky in lieu of slice-y, and the flavors are very bold in a good way. Also, prices are cheap and the portions are huge- especially the platters. The service set up is kind of weird but I wouldn't worry too much about it.

I started coming to Olive Cafe a few years ago, before the expanded seating and nice big sign on James A. Reed. While things may have gotten a little fancier in the ensuing time, it's still the same delicious place it's always been. I have to admit that I have a slight falafel problem, in that if I go to a restaurant and falafel is on the menu, I'm absolutely powerless to order anything else. Therefore, I can tell you that my friends say the gyro and schwarma are great, but I can only personally attest to how wonderful the vegetarian platter is. You get hummus, baba ganoush, three falafel balls and stuffed grape leaves. I'm not a fan of stuffed grape leaves in general, but everything else is fantastic. Oh, and it's served with the most wonderful pita bread you've ever had. The best part of that being that there's no need to long for the pita bread after you've finished your meal, because they sell it in the store and you can just grab a bag to go. Speaking of the store, it has one of the best selections you'll find of spices, beans, lentils, nuts - really, any ingredient you need for your own Mediterranean cooking, and at reasonable prices. Oh, and the pita bread. Seriously. Just buy the pita bread. I swear I will come back one day and try the schwarma for myself. Or the kofta, I've always wanted to try kofta. Someday. Someday I will not order falafel.

Long story short: finally, some legitimate ethnic food that's local to me!!! Long story long: I've actually been here a handful of times already. I had originally heard about this place from a handful of friends and classmates, so when my small group finally decided to come here as our last meeting of the school year, I was terribly excited. This place isn't in the best neighborhood nor in the most attractive of strip malls, but nonetheless, it's where it is and that has no bearing over the food. This place is more than a restaurant, it's also a small market and deli and "meat shop". Seriously, they've got fresh whole lamb legs in the case. They also apparently have a lunch buffet for like $8.95 or something like that, but I still opted to go for one of their entree plates, getting the gyro plate, which came with fries. I also got a plate of falafel for me and my friends to share. I'm so glad I got the plate. There were a lot of fries, and while they aren't anything to write home about, they do the job. My gyro plate was really good and loaded up with fresh tomatoes, cucumbers, and a really good tzatiki sauce. The falafel were plentiful and really good. I'm glad I got it for everybody to share because I wouldn't have been able to finish it all by myself. The next couple of times I've gone, it's to get things to go for my girlfriend and myself. She always gets the chicken schwarma, and that's been good as well. My girlfriend used to live just down the street and around the corner from here, but she's since moved, but I would definitely make the trip here to get some really good Mediterranean food.

I probably am biased because this place is in my backyard, but I can honestly say that if you want excellent mediterranean food, in a laid back atmosphere, with a Middle Eastern grocery store to top it all off this is the spot. The exterior is not spectacular, as this dive is in the very back corner of a strip shopping center, that is BEHIND a 7-ELEVEN, but please don't judge a book by it's cover. I have tried several of the other offerings in KC, and Olive Cafe is by far the best. They offer a lunch buffet which is perfect for someone who is interested in sampling a variety of offerings. Any other time, any of their meals will satisfy your craving. I eat here weekly, and could do so even more ofter. You may call your oder in if you are in a hurry. Two can eat for under $20 bucks. The staff is authentic, and friendly. It is worth the drive to south KC to check this place out.

  • Reed N.

I smelled this place riding my bike to Lee's Summit and back several times. I finally entered and had no idea what to get, so the man at the front recommended the Gyro and so it was. The gyro is served is a pita pocket here... not a rolled pita. And everything is in small to medium diced pieces. And abundant. Very generous servings. I had a side of fries, which in fact was a whole basket of fries. They were sprinkled with seasoned salt and were very tasty. Good food, and a decent value... and a neat little place you may never find without Yelp, or your nose! : )

Olive Cafe is a breath of fresh air in these parts, where plain is what the city orders for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. In a land where Chipotle is the standard for mexican cuisine, and General Tso has a military vice grip on the menu of every chinese restaurant within a 500 mile radius, Olive Cafe is everything I've come not to expect of Kansas City fare. First off, the decor is haphazard, dingy, and filled with ethnic stinks and spices. Exactly what I want to be immersed in when eating hummus, pita, and delicious spice-rubbed meats. Secondly, everything tastes delicious, and by everything, I mean the hummus. It's usually perfectly sweet, savory, and hearty. The gyro is cooked with nice crust on the edges, and the baba ganoush is decadent. The falafel is the best I've had. Green on the inside, fluffy, never too dense, and seasoned perfectly! Bottom line: this place rules hard!

Thank you, Yelpers, for saving me from my fast food rut. I was beginning to think there was nothing worth venturing out of my office for, since all I've seen in the area has been fast food and chains. Olive Cafe is a gem. Not the shiniest of gems, but a gem nonetheless. It's situated in something akin to a mini mart, which I'm okay with. Just don't expect anything beyond that in terms of ambience. The guys who work here were super nice to me today. I didn't know exactly what I wanted, and they recommended the kabob plate. Delicious. The seasonings were bold and just right for me. Big flavor in the spices and marinades. The chicken was my favorite, and I'd probably just order all chicken next time. The kofta was good, but I wouldn't be able to have that on its own. I didn't finish the other beef; which was a bit tough, and I didn't have a knife. Pilaf was nice and fluffy and well seasoned with (I think) turmeric and saffron. It was an appetizing yellow. My plate cam with a side salad (you can get soup instead), which was perfectly acceptable. Veggies seemed fresh and the dressing was good (like a Greek vinaigrette). Tasty, firm olives. None of them were mushy. I hate mushy olives. You can bet I'll be back. Especially since I forgot my wallet and don't have enough cash on me to leave a respectable tip (I let them know in advance, and they were friendly about it).

The food is absolutely delicious. I have not had a better gyro, falafel or hummus (the French fries are also delicious)! I would have given five stars but I don't really care for the divey atmosphere. I usually get my food to go. The grocery store part is cool and offers a wide variety of Middle Eastern food. You can also buy fresh, homemade pita bread.

I was surprised that this place had such good food! These type of store/restaurant combos have mediocre food in my experience, but this place is different. They have a lunch buffet 3 days a week for ~$9. It was a great deal - even for a vegetarian such as myself. They have all the ingredients in the buffet to make falafel sandwiches, rice, veggies, and more. Not the greatest Med food Ive had, but for a $9 buffet far above average.

Olive Café hands down serves my favorite Middle Eastern food in town. I can't really say it's my favorite restaurant because it's really food service inside of Grocery Store. But don't let that scare you off - what comes out of the kitchen is excellent and certainly the locals favorite. Olive Café is tucked away in the back of a small, older strip mall just south of the James E Reed & Bannister Road intersection (behind the 7-Eleven). When you turn into the strip mall drive straight to the back, don't pay attention to the sign on your right for the Olive Café it's their old location and now the bakery. You will see the counter when you enter the grocery store/café; a small menu is on the wall. Simply order at the counter (you don't pay yet), and go find yourself a table. The food will arrive fairly quickly, I don't recall ever taking more than 5 minutes. Once you're finished eating pay at the counter -I suggest buying some of their fresh baked breads - excellent! I've tried about 6 or 7 things so far and all have been great or excellent. Everything is very reasonably priced - $5 - $7 for most items on the menu. The falafel is absolutely my favorite in town - nicely fried but soft and moist on the inside. They serve them as an appetizer or in a pita sandwich. The sandwich has some type of saucy vegetable mix - I can't exactly explain it. The chicken and hummus platter is a generous helping of grilled chicken and hummus - almost enough for two. Mix and match with your friends, that's the best way to experience this place. Be aware, they do for an hour on Friday's for prayer. I would call ahead to confirm the time, but I believe its noon to 1pm.

Olive Cafe is officially one of my favorite lunch spots in the Southern KC area. This place doubles as a Mediterranean grocery store selling stuff I'm not familiar with so I won't go into detail about that in this review. What I will tell you about is this delectable dish they call the Chicken Hummus Plate AKA the Number 9 AKA Awesomeness. For around 8 bucks you get a plate full of scrumptious bites of chicken breast marinated and seasoned with wondrous herbs, spices, and grilled with such perfection that each bite creates a little party of fantastic in your mouth. What's even better, these cubes of wonderment sit on top a plentiful plate of hummus, drizzled with olive oil and accompanied by perfectly fluffy, but not too pillowy discs of Pita.

Thank you to everyone for your review of this place. I would have never found it without your reviews. I had lunch there last week. Wow what a great little hole in the wall. This is not your strip mall greek place this is the real deal. The food is great and the people that work there are very nice. Fresh bread baked daily, meat shop is fresh and great cooked to order food. I had a the gyro plate and it was so big had to take home about half. If you are looking for fresh goat or lamb you can get it here. They get it fresh every Thursday. I asked about a whole goat as I have some friends that like cooking a whole goat and want to try it. $100 bucks for a 20 lb goat ready to cook does not sound to bad. Great other dried goods, olives, frozen meats, huge selection of feta and other cheeses. You got to check this place out!

I have tried every Mediterranean style restaurant, cafe...etc. in and around KC and this little market/cafe is the best. It is cheap and you get a heap of food. Fresh pita and their own butcher services. How can I top that? A GEM!

Fresh pita still warm in the bag. Friendly staff. Good chicken shwarma! I work in the area, so I'll definitely return for lunch and specialty grocery items.

Confession: I wished I lived in JoCo so I could be somewhat close to this place. This review is not just about the food, but the store itself, which is what brings it from 4 to 5 stars. Growing up, falafel sandwiches were a weekly regimen. Whereas most households had kids growing up on PB&J, my sister and I grew up on falafel, pita, humous and tahina. I know my falafel and I know my Middle Eastern food well. I'm not easily smitten. This may be one of the only halal places in Kansas City, which is nice for me, since I know I can eat pretty much everything here. After reading all the reviews, I really wanted to come here but couldn't justify the long drive. Fortunately, I had on-site work nearby and decided to risk losing my parking spot to venture over during lunch. It all started with a chicken kebab sandwich, which I felt was reasonably priced. After getting it and realizing just how huge it was, I will change my opinion to it's downright, stinking cheap. Usually with quantity, you end up losing out on quality. Not here. the chicken was tender, juicy and marinated really well in whatever spices were on it. I decided to come back after work. I wandered in to check out the grocery section. This place feels really, really authentic, from the people that pop by down to what they sell. There's a wide variety of shisha if you have a hookah. I plan on coming back when I run out of mine. If not, you can purchase a small one here. In addition to hookahs and shisha, there's a nice variety of pantry items such as tahina (a must to make your own humous), halvah, sesame see treats, Turkish bars, Mid East olives and pickles, a wide selection of bulgur wheat (necessary for tabouli), frozen merguez (unless you know what merguez looks like, you'll have to ask... the packages are unmarked) and dried mint along with tons of other spices. They also have fresh pita and zataar. So fresh you can actually feel the heat coming off it because they recently took it out of the oven. Wandering about, I started to feel like I was back in Morocco. But without constantly feeling like I'm going to be molested at any moment. In fact, for such a hard core place, this place did not make me feel bad that I'm a woman, which in and of itself makes me want to go back. After hearing my accent/pronunciation, the owner started chatting me up. Based on his accent, I thought the place was more western Middle East, despite much of the food being central Middle East. Turns out he's Palestinian, which is the style in which everything is cooked. I actually ended up getting more and bringing it home. Falafel and kufta kebab. The other half was content with his falafel. I tried it and really like it. Definitely not the best I've ever had but pretty good (probably the best I'll find around here). I will say I sampled the kufta and it is the second best I've ever had. I cannot wait to devour it later. Also, for anyone that's a falafel fiend, they make their own mix from scratch and if you ask, they'll prep a bag for you so it's none of that boxed crap. That way you can cook it at home when you're good and ready. They'll give you the instructions on what to do. And here's the major plus. Upon expressing my sadness that I wouldn't be able to come often since it's so far, the owner informed me that he's building a second place right next door to Sinbad's Hookah on 39th. It should be open in June or July. I'm looking forward to good Mid East food without having to drive a half hour.

From reading the previous reviews, I was sure this was going to be fabulous, so many 5 stars. I jokingly told my dining companion prior to the meal, "You're going to thank me for this!" Well... He didn't, and I was more than a little embarrassed that I had hyped this place so much. We decided to order the Gyro and the Falafel sandwich, cut them in half and then share. This was a great plan. Then it all went terribly wrong. The first unsettling thing I noticed was that the pitas were cold. Nothing worse than warm food stuffed inside a cold pita. I will say that the Gyro meat was moist and juicy, just not very flavorful. The meat was cut into chunks, which was interesting, as well as all the vegetables. The Tzatziki sauce was very watery. The Falafels in the sandwich were fried to a very dark brown. They were also large, so that the surface area of crunchy carmelization was much smaller than usual. Actually, to be completely transparent, this was only the second restaurant that I have ever sampled a Falafel . I will say that if this had been the first...there would not have been a second. They tasted as though they had been sitting around for a while, in search of a sandwich. The texture was soft, and not the crispy texture you get when they are fried to order. I was also not fond of the dill pickle slices; lots and lots of dill pickle slices. Guess I'm nuts, but dill pickles don't feel really Middle Eastern, even if other places serve them that way, at least according to Google. What do I know? Only my second Falafel. The other one I had was just sooooo different. Enough whining! I'm already sick of hearing it. The market was cool, though. Lots of interesting, hard to find items. Fava beans, ghee, rose syrup, pomegranate syrup, guava nectar, etc. The market also has homemade pita bread. If you come here...do it for the market, and by the way, bring cash. They don't accept credit or debit. There's only one thing left to say...Papu's, in the Shell gas station on 75th St. in Waldo, and you will thank me.

By far my favorite Mediterranean eatery. Family owned and operated. The place is really a small supermarket or convenience store, but their products are mostly imported from the middle east and other places. They also have their own bakery and sell fresh pita bread and other specialty breads. If you happen to be around near lunch time, you should try their gyro sandwiches or shish kebab. They have a very unique home-made flavors to their food. Their kebab plates come with a delicious lentil soup or salad. just made me hungry thinking about them...

I work just down the street, and as a vegetarian LOVE middle eastern food. After reading all the fabulous reviews, I had to try this place. I stopped here one Friday and ordered the falafel. Much to my dismay, my food was served cold, with absolutely no hint of warmth to it at all. It did not even look like a falafel, but a mash of falafel meal. The tzatziki sauce was watery and tasteless. I was thoroughly disappointed. I'm hoping they were having an "off day" and this is not typical. However, I cannot figure out how you serve food that cold. I'd much rather eat at Aladdin or even Jerusalem cafe. I'll try it again, but if it sucks a second time, I'm done. Update: well, I have been to Olive Cafe a few times since my initial visit. The food has been leaps and bounds better (and hotter) than that fateful first try. I've had the veggie plate, the falafel (again), the falafel soup and some of the bakery items. They are ALL delicious. And again, it's just up the street from my workplace. Definitely 4 stars in my mind now.

The chicken samosa had a spectacular minced meat and herb filling, was the star of the meal. I would go back for the samosas. Baba ganoush had a smokiness to it, which was good but a bit odd when not expecting so much smokiness. Yes I know the eggplant is to be fire roasted before pureeing. Pita bread was home made and less than desirable. To take it to the next level, it could be warmed on the char grill or baked in a fire brick oven. The hummus was nice with a lemony/ tahini flavor profile. I would go back if I happened to be in the area, but it is a bit off the beaten path and requires a concerted effort to get there.

Olive Cafe has the best gyro in town, period. I have tried numerous items on their menu. Nothing has been short of spectacular. Each time I bring someone to the olive cafe, their initial response is one of skepticism until they taste the food. This is a full grocery store that happens to serve some amazing food. The employees are friendly and to the point. Everything I have had has been enough for two which is great for the price.

In a word, GREAT! I love this place, just thinking about eating here makes my mouth water. I have gone here several times in the past few months since a colleague introduced me to the joint...speaking of which is not in the best part of town. On my most recent visit, driving to the hole-in-the-wall, I saw at least 2 drug deals go down. When I went to leave, a taxi driver had parked so close to me I had to hunt him down inside and ask him to move....all that aside, the food is fabulous and the staff is super friendly. If you are looking for cheap and authentic mediterranean food and a nicely stocked market, this place cannot be beat. I highly recommend the humus gyro plate! Fresh humus and the pita bread is still warm from their bakery! MUST GO!

They have the best fresh Manakeesh & Falafel. Manakeesh is a round bread sprinkled with either cheese, ground meat or herbs (zaatar). It's ideal for breakfast or lunch.

Awesome food. Best Mediterranean food in Kansas City. Love their daily buffet. Good options for veggies as well as meat eaters.

Ambience is very "low-key" haha... just go and try it. ; )

I have tried every Mediterranean style restaurant, cafe...etc. in and around KC and this little market/cafe is the best. It is cheap and you get a heap of food. Fresh pita and their own butcher services. How can I top that? A GEM!

MUST GO!
